Embryo Transfer | Support On The Day
Here at Qi Medicine Acupuncture, we support many women on embryo transfer day.
Embryo transfers can be demanding on both the body and spirit, often feeling medicalized and systematic.
Despite this, there are ways to nurture yourself throughout the process—before, after, and during your entire fertility journey. (See how we can support your fertility here.).
Simple Tips to Support an Embryo Transfer
1. Pre- and post-transfer acupuncture treatments
Ongoing research suggests that acupuncture may enhance the effectiveness of IVF treatment. At the very least, acupuncture is deeply calming, helping shift your body from a “fight, flight, or freeze” state into “accept and rest” mode.
2. Snack after acupuncture
If you’re having both pre- and post-transfer acupuncture treatments, have a small snack between your transfer and your second acupuncture session. Acupuncture on an empty stomach may make you feel faint.
3. Gentle exercise
Start your day with a light walk and a nutritious breakfast 1–2 hours before your transfer. If your transfer is early in the morning, opt for something simple with healthy fats and protein, such as half an avocado.
4. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and bone broth—ideally warm or room-temperature liquids. Your IVF clinic may request a “comfortably full bladder,” as hydration helps dilate blood vessels and lift the uterus into an optimal position for transfer. (See what foods to eat for fertility here.)
5. Wear warm, closed-in shoes
In Chinese Medicine, the warmth of your feet is linked to the warmth of your womb. Keep your feet warm with closed-in shoes, Ugg boots, or slippers.
6. Clear your calendar
Plan a relaxed afternoon. Watching a funny movie or TV show with your partner, a friend, or a family member can help. Laughter releases endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good hormones, and helps counteract stress.
7. Consider intercourse
Having sex the night before a frozen embryo transfer may improve pregnancy outcomes—not due to sperm, but because seminal fluid creates a more natural environment for conception.
8. Salty snacks
You may have heard about eating hot chips after your transfer. While there’s no scientific backing, it could be a comforting ritual. The salt and carbohydrates may be beneficial, especially after a fresh transfer, as salt helps reduce fluid retention. For a slightly healthier option, try popcorn or seaweed.
And remember—there’s no need to overthink it. You can return to normal activities the day after your transfer. Your body is wise and knows how to take care of things.
Best of luck!
